Rack Product Design Language

Biamp Systems

Red Dot Award

After acquiring several brands of rack-mounted devices in the A/V space, Biamp desired a visual language to unify their product offerings.

Using existing Biamp product guidelines as a jumping-off point, I created a scalable visual language that robustly accounts for any number of button, indicator, display and venting requirements. The final result provided detailed instructions on how to implement the language across a broad range of scenarios.

My contribution:

  • Competitive research

  • Concept generation and refinement

  • Product strategy

  • Visual Brand Language documentation

Exploration

Unlike many industrially designed products, exploration for rack-mounted products is best done primarily in two dimensions. Concepts focused on the interplay between the 2D and 3D qualities of the design.

Result

The resulting design language accommodates a broad variety of UI layouts on rack-mounted products. The main visual signature is two red stripes, one on each side of the device. This was inspired by past Biamp products, designed by members of my team, which have a thin red band running horizontally around their perimeter. When installed one atop the other, the red lines form a continuous element running the height of the rack.
